It's showtime! Again!
Arriving 36 years after the original Beetlejuice, Michael Keaton reprises his role as the ghost with the most in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Tim Burton's long-awaited follow-up to the cult classic. The sequel likewise picks up decades later, when three generations of the Deetz family return to the home that Beetlejuice still haunts, and all hell breaks loose — literally.
After an unexpected family tragedy, Delia (Catherine O'Hara) and Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder, also reprising their respective roles) head back to Winter River, along with Lydia's rebellious daughter, Astrid (Jenna Ortega). There, Astrid accidentally opens a portal to the Afterlife, and the titular "bio-exorcist" is summoned. The cast also includes Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, and four-time Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe as new characters.
Like the first film, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was directed by Burton, albeit this time from a script by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. Beetlejuice's Ve Neill, Steve LaPorte and Robert Short won the Oscar for Best Makeup at the 61st Oscars. For the sequel, Burton has enlisted Oscar-winning creature effects and special makeup FX creative supervisor Neal Scanlan and Oscar-winning hair and makeup designer Christine Blundell.
The rest of the creative team behind Burton's Beetlejuice Beetlejuice includes cinematographer Haris Zambarloukos as well as frequent collaborators such as production designer Mark Scruton, film editor Jay Prychidny, four-time Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood, and Oscar-nominated film composer Danny Elfman. The horror comedy was produced by Burton, David Geffen, Marc Toberoff, Tommy Harper, and two-time Oscar winners Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice arrives in theaters on Sept. 6, 2024. Watch the trailer below.
